In the past, the data from meters was checked, or read, by a person. The information was compiled and then reported to gas and electric companies for billing purposes. Today more states are turning to smart meters to record resource usage of electricity and water over time. The smart meters automatically send usage information back to the product supplier using RF transmissions, typically based on a cell phone, pager, satellite, radio, power line, Wi-Fi, or Internet communication method. Because the new technology exposes users to EMF radiation, some people have experienced side effects such as:

Smart meters connect every home to a digital network. Unlike analog meters, this new system allows suppliers to remotely control power usage, giving them the ability to shut your resources off if they feel you’ve used too much, even if you are willing to pay the bill for the additional usage. There is also the threat that if there were a disturbance to the power grid on which the system operates, millions of users would be cut off from gas, water, and electricity until restored. Current users of smart meters have reported cases of widespread overcharging and irregularities reported from utility usage. Some report bills are skyrocketing after smart meter installation despite using the same amount of electricity that had been used prior to getting the smart meter. The overbilling is still considered a mystery, and even though companies know this occurs, refunds to customers for overcharging are scarce. When it comes down to it, the suppliers are going to rely on the technology rather than listen to the customer.

If your State still allows you to use the analog meter, you should consider it. Analog meters do not incur the same health and system reliability risks that the smart readers do. If you are not allowed to make the decision for yourself, make sure to continue to record your own power usage to prevent overbilling. Document your historical usage, and then call, email and write letters to your utility company. Continue lobbying to your state politicians to overturn the mandatory usage of smart meters.

PECO declares that using smart meters will give “faster, more convenient service,” which will allow the company to “detect problems faster,” and “identify potentially dangerous situations.” PECO makes no mention of the DNA damaging health affects of smart meters, like the bursts of EMF radiation that can cause cancer.

Catherine Frompovich is a retired nutritionist with many advanced degrees in the holistic sciences. She is also a writer and breast cancer survivor who is fighting PECO’s AMI Smart Meter mandate in her Philadelphia home. As reported by Naturalblaze.com, Ms. Frompovich recently gave testimony to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s Administrative Law Court.

She presented evidence from other EMF researchers who confirmed the 24/7 presence of radiation frequency (RF) and electromagnetic radiation (EMF) is similar to the cell phone “cancer-causing technology” that would be detrimental to her health:

” . . . Smart meters and cell phones occupy similar frequency bands of the electromagnetic spectrum . . There is building evidence that the [smart meter’s] sharp, high intensity pulses are particularly harmful, [and] the cell phone study findings are applicable . . .”

Without an opt-out provision, the threat of no electric service and the forced health dangers from smart meters, Frompovich also believes her personal freedom is at stake. As part of her testimony, she refers to Pennsylvania state’s constitution which proclaims a citizen’s inherent rights to defend life and liberty.

There are other constitutional infringements from smart meters that Frompovich doesn’t address – the loss of privacy, data mining and yielding control of your energy. Abby Martin from Breaking the Set calls smart meters “little surveillance units” and gives this report about their snooping.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in California, offers an opt-out for customers who don’t want smart meters, but like PECO, they do not inform customers of their inherent dangers.  Mechanical engineer Rob Smart, M.S., gives an excellent overview of those EMF spiking waves and the serious health effects in his presentation called “The Dark Side of Smart Meters.”

For example, on October 26, 2012, a house burned for about 35 minutes before emergency responders could step in and do their jobs. The firefighters arrived within four minutes, but because there was a live power line involved, they were forced to stand by until the power could be shut off. Gibsons’ fire chief Bob Stevens noted that the fire was primarily located around the meter base and its connections. Fire personnel tried their best to control the blaze while they waited for the power to be cut off so they could take care of business.

While the official cause was not stated, it was highly suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical problem.

The Gibsons fire is not the only fire to be linked to smart meters. A report by the Ontario Fire Marshals’ Office attributed smart meter installations to a number of fires in the area. Faulty base plate connections, defects and careless installation were just a few mechanisms suggested to be behind the link between smart meters and house fires.

And yet, utility companies continue to assert that these devices are totally, completely safe. In fact, they are often compared to being equal to cell phones and cell towers — which have also been shown to be quite dangerous and are associated with many health problems. The World Health Organization has even listed radiation as a Class 2B carcinogen based on studies that have linked cell phone radiation to brain tumors.

Smart meters are really anything but smart. They have numerous risks to humans and their environment, and are really just another tool for Big Brother to spy on you with. Why take the risk of losing your home — or your life?

Smart meters are known for releasing dirty electricity and high-pulse harmonics into interior wiring of whatever buildings they’re installed in. They are also known for emanating electromagnetic non-iodizing radiation frequencies, also known as RFs or EMFs. These EMFs are being transmitted into every living space, work place and any other area that has been retrofitted with a smart meter device.

According to ActivistPost.com, smart meter devices are similar to microwaves — if your microwave didn’t have a door and couldn’t be turned off while generating what are known as non-thermal adverse health effects.

The World Health Organization’s IARC classifies such emissions as Class 2B carcinogens, but that doesn’t seem to be very important to many people. However, some senators are realizing that there are other potential dangers when it comes to smart devices.

The network of cellphone and mast towers that essentially functions as the brain of our “smart” technology society doesn’t just have a few holes in it — it could be hacked into and taken down with relative ease, actually.

Four U.S. senators have come up with a proposal to enhance the security of our energy grid. The bill was introduced in June 2016 and is entitled the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act of 2016. The senators are essentially proposing the use of analog technology at utility companies to reduce their vulnerability, but consumers would still have smart devices that would leave them open to attack.

The lack of security associated with smart meters is nothing new. In 2013, the BBC reported on the many security flaws seen in these awful little devices. Security consultant Eireann Leverett from IO Active told the BBC that there are two primary ways of hacking into a smart meter; through their mobile communication network, or through tampering with the hardware.

Being able to hack many devices at the same time — through their mobile network — is what is of most concern. A single individual may not particularly important, but why stop there when you can take out every meter in roughly the same amount of time?

Smart meters are just as threatening to national security in the United States as they are in England. If our government will not try to make our energy grid more secure, it is up to citizens to prepare and protect themselves.
